In Process Quality Test for Plastic Containers

  1. Leakage test/Collapsibility Tests – applicable to containers which are to be squeezed in order to remove contents. The yield of its contents is 90% at a required rate of flow at ambient temperature. Fill 10 containers with water. Keep them inverted at room temperature. There should be no sign of leakage for 24 hours.
  2. Clarity of Aqueous Extract – select unlabeled portion from a suitable container. Cut these portions into strips. Wash it with extraneous matter by shaking with two separate portions of distilled water. Transfer to flask that is previously washed with chromic acid. Rinse and add 250 mL of distilled water. Cover the flask. Autoclave at 121°C for 30 minutes. It should be colourless and free from turbidity.
  3. Non-volatile Residue Test – fill 5 containers with dilute suspension. The cloudiness of the diluted suspension in each container is detectable when viewed through the containers as compared with a container of the same type filled with water. Evaporate 100 mL of the extract. Allow it to dry at 105°C. Residue should weigh not more than 12.5 mg.
  4. Water Vapour Permeability Test – fill 5 containers with nominal volume of water and heat seal the bottles with aluminum foil. Weigh accurately each container and allow to stand for 14 days humidity – 60 +/- temperature at 20°C and 25°C. Reweigh the containers. Loss in weight in each container is not more than 0.2%.
